History

Studying History at KS4
3 hours of history per week for Year 11. Year 10 receive 5 hours of study over a 2-week period.

During Year 10, we focus on the modern aspects of the GCSE course. The students will first learn about the USA from 1920 to 1972 and will investigate the economic and social changes that occurred during the Roaring Twenties and how these were affected by the Great Depression and WW2. The second half of the course sees the students engage in an analysis of the Civil Rights struggle, specifically looking at how African-Americans were able to campaign for a more equal society. We then move onto a study of the Cold War, particularly looking at the origins, transformation and development of this conflict and how it affected the geo-politics of the time.

Year 11 sees us step back from the modern era by first tracking the development of medicine through time, where students analyse the factors that have seen us advance from a limited understanding of the body and disease to a situation where we were able to combat a global pandemic in a relatively short period of time. The final module of GCSE History is a depth study into the reign of Elizabeth I, where we investigate the major problems, successes and contributions of her reign.
