STUDYING ENGLISH LITERATURE AT KS5
6 lessons per week

The study of a fascinating range of poems, novels and plays. You will study two key modules: Aspects of Tragedy and Elements of Crime Writing. You will also complete coursework where you will choose your own texts to analyse. This highly respected subject will teach you to form coherent, persuasive and well written arguments.

Elements of Crime Writing:

  • The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
  • Atonement
  • Poetry by Robert Browning, George Crabbe and Oscar Wilde

Aspects of Tragedy:

  • ‘Othello’
  • ‘Richard II’
  • The Great Gatsby

English teaches you to think deeply about a key issue, to form a line of argument and to debate this with clarity and evidence to support your point. These critical skills are central to many careers. English graduates go on to become successful lawyers, journalists, managers, teachers, authors, restaurant critics, even accountants! Really there is no limit to the careers that are available as English teaches you to be engaged and thoughtful.
