Health Services

Our medical room is situated near the main reception in the Communications block. First Aiders are available to attend medical emergencies and to deal with students and staff who become ill or get injured during the school day. In addition to our medical room facilities, several members of staff at The Cedars also have first aid qualifications.

NHS MHST

What is mental health?

Mental health is how we think, feel and act. Everyone’s mental health changes over time.

Our mental health can be affected by our experiences, things around us and what happens in our lives. Looking after our own mental health is a very important part of growing up.

It is natural to feel a range of emotions but if you are finding that your mental health is becoming difficult to manage and is getting in the way of your daily life, you can reach out for help.

Anyone can be affected by problems with their mental health. Research shows around one in five young people in the UK are likely to have a mental health concern. You are not alone.

What is the Mental Health Support Team in School?

The Mental Health Support Teams in Schools (MHST) is an NHS service that works in schools, helping young people with their mental health.

The MHST is made up of trained staff called Educational Mental Health Practitioners and Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners (or EMHPs and CWPs for short)

How does the support work?

Your school will have at least one EMHP/CWP. They can help if you are having problems such as:

- feeling worried

- feeling sad or low

· finding your feelings hard to manage

They will teach you simple tools that are proven to help, such as:

- solving problems step by step

- noticing helpful and unhelpful thoughts using Low-Intensity Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

- calming activities like mindfulness

They will work with you to put together a plan, just for you. If you agree, your family or carers will be told how they can help you at home and in school.

Important information

To get a referral, you will need to speak to the Mental Health Lead in school. You can ask your teacher who this is. Before school sends a referral, your parent or carer will be asked for permission. For more information about this, visit bit.ly/MHSTH4T

If you make your own referral on the My Self Referral website, www.myselfreferral-llr.nhs.uk, you will need to give permission for your school to be told. You will be seen in school, so they need to know.

Your NHS health record will be checked, and letters will also be sent to your GP. You can find out more information here
